Corrugated Furniture Design and Construction System

A piece of furniture such as a standing desk is constructed of intersecting folded prisms provided with a novel slot joint system which affords lateral and torsional stability, simplicity, and long life to such furniture. Among other things, in some implementations, a piece of furniture is formed using four sheets of corrugated fiberboard die-cut with slots and scores. A first one of the pieces is a sheet of corrugated cardboard folded into interconnected, adjacent triangular prisms (which we sometimes refer to simply as conjoined triangle prisms) that provide a work surface. A second one and third one of the pieces are sheets of corrugated cardboard folded into conjoined rectangular prisms that provide mirrored (relative to one another in the finished piece of furniture) vertical supports that elevate the work surface above the floor. A fourth one of the pieces is a sheet of corrugated cardboard folded into a rectangular prism that serves as a support brace for lateral stability. The piece of furniture is formed by mating the slots of the vertical supports with the work surface to form joints. These slotted joints grow tighter as the vertical structural supports simultaneously wedge apart and clamp together the work surface's conjoined triangular prisms. The support brace may then be mated with the two parallel vertical structural supports, wedging the supports apart and adding additional rigidity and strength to the structure. The described furniture construction system is designed to be transported and stored in a flat-packed condition and assembled when needed.

at least two separate folded cardboard structural pieces, each of the two pieces comprising at least two conjoined prisms, a first one of the two pieces forming a vertical support, a second one of the two pieces comprising a non-vertical functional surface, the two separate folded cardboard structural pieces being interconnected at one or more slot joints, the slot joints being configured to hold the two separate folded cardboard structural pieces together and to enhance the strength of the cardboard furniture structure.
