[Problem] To ensure that a retaining member for an electrochromic (EC) element does not impart a large amount of shearing force between the two substrates of the EC element, and to enable the EC element to be retained precisely with respect to the retaining member. [Solution] An EC element (28) has a structure whereby an EC layer (40) is arranged between two substrates (26, 36). A retaining member (32) retains the EC element (28). The retaining member (32) supports the peripheral end face (36a) of one substrate (36), and positions the EC element (28) with respect to the retaining member (32) in the surface direction of the EC element (28). |
