PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen separation membrane having no surface layer of Pb or Pb alloy and having high hydrogen permeation speed.SOLUTION: A treatment method of a hydrogen separation membrane is provided in which a hydrogen separation membrane composed of a group 5A metal or its alloy and having no surface layer of Pb or Pb alloy is heated in an oxygen-containing gas atmosphere, and the organic substances adhered to the surface of the membrane is oxidized and removed. In the treatment method, the nitrogen concentration in the oxygen-containing gas atmosphere is 0.5 mol% or less. A hydrogen separation membrane is also provided which is composed of a group 5A metal or its alloy and has no surface layer of Pb or Pb alloy and substantially does not contain nitrogen.
