A pattern-discovering device according to an embodiment has a pattern generation unit, a pattern storage unit, a pattern selection unit, and a pattern deletion unit. The pattern generation unit generates a set of patterns from data containing multiple items. The pattern storage unit stores the set of patterns generated by the pattern generation unit. The pattern selection unit selects at least one pattern to be deleted from the set of patterns stored in the pattern storage unit by referring to evaluation values that indicate changes in the distribution state of the items in the set of patterns, each of said changes being caused by removing at least one pattern selected as a candidate from among the set of patterns. The pattern deletion unit deletes the at least one pattern that is selected for deletion by the pattern selection unit from the pattern storage unit. |
