449,488. Ball joints. NIELSEN, K. A. N., 30, Jyllandsvej, Frederiksberg, Copenhagen. Feb. 5, 1935, No. 3748. [Class 65 (ii)] [See also Group XI] In a ball joint, particularly for supporting electric lamps, of the kind wherein a metal sleeve 10 is placed between the ball 7 and its socket 6, the wall of the sleeve is so thin and the metal of which it is made, e.g. copper, so yielding that the sleeve is forced to embrace the ball closely when it is pressed down in the socket. In the form shown the sleeve is pressed down by a spring 14, bearing against the base 3 to which the socket is attached, through the intermediary of a rubber ring 12 between two washers. The sleeve and the ball are preferably made of metals having such mutual friction that turning of the ball draws the sleeve tightly against it, so that it is held in any position of adjustment. In the form shown, the sleeve is in one piece, but in a modification it is divided longitudinally into a number of strips, which are pressed outwards against the wall of the socket by a spring ring. |
