A pharmaceutical composition for the transmucosal delivery of a medicament, preferably a vitamin such as vitamin B12 (cobalamin) or vitamin B9 (folic acid), comprises: one or more pharmaceutically acceptable lipid excipients, and one or more medicaments, preferably vitamins, soluble in the lipid excipient. Preferably the lipid excipient is one or more fatty acids, hydroxy fatty acids, esters of fatty acids and esters of hydroxy fatty acids wherein the amount of lipid excipient present in the composition is preferably from about 60% to about 85% w/w. The transmucosal administration preferably comprises buccal administration. The composition may further include flavourings, preferably essential oils such as orange terpenes or D-limonene; antioxidants such as palmitoyl ascorbic acid; and/or preservatives such as propyl parabens and butyl parabens. Exemplified formulations include: (i) a mixture of vitamin B12 in a mixture of oleic acid-rac-glycerol and caprylic acid; (ii) a mixture of vitamin B12 in a mixture of capric acid and caprylic acid; and (iii) a mixture of vitamin B9 (folic acid) in lactic capric acid. |
