Processes for converting lignocellulose to feedstock and downstream products are disclosed. The processes include acid treatment of lignocellulose to produce a fermentation feedstock. Downstream products may include acrylic acid-based products such as diapers, paper and paper-based products, ethanol, lactic acid, biofuels such as biodiesel and fuel additives, and detergents. The invention provides a method of making a downstream product from a carbohydrate composition, wherein the carbohydrate composition is a deacidified hydrolyzate of lignocellulose or a product thereof, and wherein the carbohydrate composition comprises carbohydrates; the method comprising using the carbohydrates, within the deacidified hydrolysatc or the product thereof, as a feedstock in a fermentation process. The invention also provides a method for converting lignocellulose to a downstream product, comprising: converting lignocellulose to carbohydrate using an acid as a hydrolysis catalyst; converting the produced lignocellulosic-derived acid hydrolyzate to a deacidified hydrolyzate; and using the carbohydrates, within the deacidified hydrolysate or a product thereof, as a feedstock in a fermentation process. |
