Various embodiments of the present invention relate to a method and an apparatus for generating a thumbnail of video content in an electronic device. The method for generating a thumbnail of video content in an electronic device may include the operations of: separating video content into multiple pieces; extracting characteristics of each separated piece; comparing the characteristics of each extracted piece to the characteristics of each piece of at least one different video content; and determining a thumbnail of the video content in a piece different from the same piece based on the comparison result.
