<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel azo-based dichroic dye holding a high order parameter (S value) and having an absorption maximum wavelength in the long wavelength region, and a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal device containing the dye. <P>SOLUTION: The azo-based dichroic dye is represented by structural formula (I) (wherein R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>, R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">5</SP>each independently denote a monovalent substituent; R<SP POS="POST">3</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">4</SP>each independently denote a hydrogen atom or a monovalent substituent; a ring Ar denotes a thienothiazole ring which may have a substituent, a 1,4-phenylene ring which may have a substituent, or a 1,4-naphthylene ring which may have a substituent; the plurality of Ar may be identical or different; however, in the case where at least one ring Ar is a 1,4-phenylene ring which may have a substituent, at least one of the other rings Ar is a 1,4-naphthylene ring which may have a substituent; and n denotes an integer of≥2). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT</p> |
