The device comprises: a system (10) to control the width of the strip located upstream from the cutting means; means of stretching or releasing the strip which can be activated before cutting the small strips (1a) if the multiple of the sum of the widths of the small strips does not correspond to the total width of the strip, said means being capable of stretching or releasing the strip in a controlled manner to reduce or increase the width of same until said width corresponds to said multiple of the sum of the widths of the small strips.
