[Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] Variable-speed gearing automatically variable with the load comprises rotary and centrifugal masses 3, Fig. 2, which produce alternately positive and negative turning impulses. The positive impulses are transmitted directly to the driven shaft 7 by a primary one-way clutch 8. The negative impulses are transmitted through a further primary one-way clutch 10, a reversing train 9, 11, 12, and a secondary one-way clutch 13 so as to drive the shaft 7 in the same direction as the positive impulses. The masses 3 which are rotated by a link connection 4, Fig. 3, with a driving-drum 2 turn loosely upon eccentrics 6 to which the impulses are imparted. The eccentrics 6 are rigid with a sleeve 5 loose on the shaft 7 which sleeve has a flange 5<1>, Fig. 4, projecting between the two primary one-way clutches 8, 10. A one-way clutch at 29, Fig. 2, allows the driven shaft 7 to be braked by resistance on the driving- shaft 1. Insulating material such as lead may be interposed at 33 between the shaft bearings 30, 31, 32 and the casing 20 to eliminate noise. A brake 28 applied at the will of the operator to the wheel 9 produces an abutment so that the negative impulses react as forward impulses on the sleeve 5 and are returned as such to the driving-shaft. In Fig. 1, not shown, is an arrangement with a separate sliding-gear reversing-gear between the shaft 7 and a tail shaft. An arrangement is described with reference to Fig. 9, not shown, in which reversed driving is effected by reversing the positiveimpulse clutch 8, Fig. 2, and one of the clutches 10, 13 of the negative impulse train. |
