A method of mass spectrometry is disclosed involving scanning a parameter of a first device, such as a collision cell 2, through which a mixture of ion components is passed. Different ion components are transmitted through or produced in the first device 2 at different values of the parameter (eg collision energy) and because the time required to analyse the ion components in the mass analyser > the time required to fragment or react ions in the collision cell then scanning the device parameter introduces a temporal modulation or profile to the intensity of the ion components. This temporal variation is then removed in an ion trap or gas cell prior to mass analysing the components through a process of homogenisation. The collision energy of the collision cell may be scanned multiple times within the time required to measure the mass spectrum. |
