Aluminium ethylate is prepared by reacting aluminium or an alloy thereof with ethyl alcohol at a temperature above 100 DEG C. under a pressure higher than the vapour pressure of the alcohol at the temperature used. The temperature preferably exceeds 120 DEG C. and the reaction may be regulated by the gradual addition of the alcohol, of which only a small excess is required, to the aluminium; known catalysts, such as mercuric chloride and iodine, may be present. Suitable alloys are those with zinc and copper. An example is given.
