The device has permanent magnets (18) which are arranged in the measuring direction in an equidistant manner. The permanent magnets are fixed to the segments (20) of the incremental partition (14). The magnetic field is detected by a magnetic sensor (24) of the reading head. The position of the reading head is assigned to a partition section of the incremental partition within the segment through the magnitude of the detected magnetic field.
