Bearing assembly (1) for a railway axle (2), the assembly (1) having a rolling-contact bearing (3) mounted coaxially about an axis (A) of rotation on a hub (4) of the axle (2), and an intermediate inspection cover (21), which is mounted detachably against the bearing (3) to seal off the bearing (3) from the outside and allow periodic inspection and maintenance of the bearing (3); a sensor device (41) for sensing the operating parameters of the bearing (3) being built into the intermediate cover (21) in order constantly to monitor the operating parameters of the bearing (3).
