Controlling an opto-physiological sensor comprising a plurality of light sources and at least one photodetector, configured to capture radiation after travelling through body tissue, comprises: obtaining independent signals from each light source; performing signal quality measurements on each signal; modifying an illumination intensity of each source and repeating the measurements of quality; further modifying the intensity of each source whose signals have undergone a rise or drop in quality and repeating the quality measurement; fixing the intensity of sources whose signals have reached a peak in quality; and selectively deactivating sources whose signals are below a threshold. In another aspect, selecting wavelengths of light to use in an opto-physiological sensor, comprising multiple light source channels with two or more sources, comprises: setting a channel quality value for a channel to zero, determining for each source whether the source is enabled; incrementing the channel quality value for the channel by one; comparing the quality value with a threshold; and disabling the channel if the quality value does not exceed the threshold. These features may be used to take into account patient age or an accumulation of sweat or creams on the skin. |
