Packaged radiation source and detector

A radiation sensor of the type having a packaged radiation source and detector, which includes an isolator that blocks propagation within the package of radiation from the source to the detector, in order to improve signal to noise ratio of the sensor. The isolator is formed by appropriately formed surfaces of the package.

1. A proximity sensor comprising:
a first radiation detector; a second radiation detector; an optical isolator configured to impede radiation from propagating between the first radiation detector and the second radiation detector; a radiation source; a first cover provided over the radiation source, the first cover including a directing surface, wherein the radiation source and directing surface are together arranged so that the directing surface reflects a portion of radiation emitted by the radiation source directly onto the first radiation detector via an optical path, a portion of the optical path between the directing surface and the first radiation detector being substantially within the first cover, wherein an optical start signal is generated to initiate a time period for proximity sensing.
