A method for controlling an engine system having a diesel engine, at least one emission control device and oil to lubricate the engine, the method comprising adaptively varying an operation of the engine to reduce production of soot by the engine based upon at least one of a current state of the emission control device and a current state of the oil of the engine, wherein the operation of the engine is controlled to reduce the soot produced by the engine when the current state of the emission control device exceeds a respective predetermined threshold, wherein the emission control device is a diesel particulate filter system having a supply of additive stored in an additive reservoir and the current state of the emission control device is the amount of additive in the reservoir.
