Systems and methods for near field target simulation

A simulation device and a system and method for using the simulation device are disclosed. The simulation device may contain a plurality of antenna elements positionable on or near a radar or other sensing device. The simulation device may be configured to control the plurality of antenna elements to transmit signals that simulate a reflection of an electromagnetic signal off of one or more targets of particular sizes at particular azimuths, elevations, distances, trajectories, and/or velocities.

1. A computer-implemented method for simulating target objects, the method comprising:
receiving parameters corresponding to characteristics of one or more target objects to be simulated; receiving, by a simulation device, a first beam of near-field electromagnetic radiation from a radar device, the simulation device having an antenna array greater than or substantially equal to an aperture of the radar device, the antenna array being substantially transparent to a normal operation of the radar device; calculating, by a processor based on the first beam of the near-field electromagnetic radiation, characteristics of a beam of far-field electromagnetic radiation expected to be received by the radar device and reflect off of the one or more target objects having the parameters; and transmitting, by the simulation device, a second beam based on the calculated characteristics corresponding to the beam of the far-field electromagnetic radiation.
