A novel class of aminidate complexes can be used as an ingredient of a catalyst system. The catalyst system can be used in polymerizations of ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon monomers.

1. An amidinate complex of the general formula where
M represents a Group 3 metal or lanthanide metal atom;L represents a neutral Lewis base;z is an integer of from 0 to 3 inclusive;each R2 independently is H, a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group, the radical of a heterocyclic compound, or a heteroatom-containing functionality;R1 is a halogen atom or R2;each R3 is a —N[SiH(R4)2]2 group where each R4 is C1-C10 alkyl group, with the proviso that two R2 groups or R1 and one R2 group, together with the atoms to which each is bonded, optionally form a ring structure.
