Disclosed are a fingerprint authenticating apparatus and an operating method thereof. The method for operating a fingerprint authenticating apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention includes the steps of: monitoring whether a finger is touched based on the variation of a voltage applied to a driving electrode in a sleep mode; transmitting an interrupt to an application processor (AP) if the touch of the finger is recognized; and sensing the fingerprint of the finger by entering a normal mode according to a control signal from the AP.
