The present invention relates to a power supply device for a ship and a controlling method thereof, wherein a thruster can be operated efficiently by supplying power converted in accordance with a speed required by the thruster using a power conversion part in a ship including an axial power generator. According to an embodiment of the present invention, provided is a power supply device including a main power generator and an axial power generator. The power supply device comprises: a thruster part installed on the ship to control the position of the ship; a control panel for controlling power generated by the axial power generator to be supplied to a power consumer in the ship; and a power conversion part installed between the main power generator and the axial power generator, converting the power supplied from the main power generator and controlling the power to be supplied to the thruster part to satisfy a thrust-required speed required by the thruster part.
