PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simpler and easier method for manufacturing a retardation film.SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing a retardation film includes the steps of: applying, to a substrate, a composition formed by containing a crystalline polymer with a photoreactive group and a solvent; removing the solvent in the composition, by drying the composition under reduced pressure or by drying the composition under heating at a temperature less than a liquid crystal phase temperature of the crystalline polymer after having naturally dried the composition, to form a photoreactive layer; irradiating the photoreactive layer with linear polarized light to form a heat orientation layer; and subjecting the heat orientation layer to a heat treatment at a temperature which is the liquid crystal phase temperature of the crystalline polymer or more and less than an isotropic phase transition temperature.
