An automated method of diagnosing a lead anomaly in an implanted lead of an implantable medical device implanted in a patient comprising: emitting a test signal through an output current pathway proximate the implanted lead for a test duration; monitoring one or more independent monitor current pathways associated with one or more conductors within the implanted lead during the test duration to generate sensed signals; automatically analyzing the sensed signals for any induced signals on the monitor current pathways in response to the test signals to determine if there are any indications that signify a potential lead anomaly; and if there are any indications that signify the potential lead anomaly, automatically initiating one or more responses to confirm, further diagnose, compensate for, or notify a user of the potential lead anomaly.
