[Class 140] [See also Groups XVI and XVII] Flanged closures for containers and the like are produced from a blank of fibrous and metal laminations, such as paper and foil, which are united by a flexible or elastic adhesive, the blank being subjected in the presence of heat, to the action of dies for conforming it to the desired shape. By using a flexible or elastic adhesive, the blank can be given the desired shape without damaging the material while retaining the layers in intimate contact, and the adhesive then hardens or sets as a result of the heat treatment. Layers of paper, rag stock or like fibrous material are united by vegetable glue and the metal foil or sheet is attached thereto by an adhesive containing rubber or a resin. The blank is shaped by dies to form a flanged container head and may be coated with wax &c. before flanging ; this coating assists in forming subsequently a hermetic seal between the container and the head. |
