The present invention provides novel methods of making a non-corrosive base solution for use as an alkalinity increasing agent and/or antioxidant. The present invention further provides novel compositions and methods which can be used to provide relief from acidosis, acidemia, and disorders related to or complicated by acidosis or excessive free radical or other reactive oxygen species production in mammalian subjects.

1. A method for preparing a resultant mixture having a high concentration of OH− ions comprising:
a) preparing a first solution by adding calcium oxide to water; b) agitating the first solution to increase a rate or amount of dissociation of the calcium oxide; c)measuring the pH of the first solution; wherein if the pH of the solution is less than 12.5, an additional amount of calcium oxide is added to the first solution to create a second solution; d) agitating the second solution to increase a rate or amount of dissociation of the calcium oxide; and e) measuring the pH of the second solution to determine that it has a of about 12.5.
