A membrane electrode assembly provided with: a polymer electrolyte membrane that has a contact surface; a multilayer body that is positioned on the contact surface and that includes a microporous layer and an electrode catalyst layer that is positioned between the microporous layer and the polymer electrolyte membrane; and a gasket layer that is positioned further to the outside of the contact surface than an outer peripheral edge of the multilayer body and that, as seen from a direction that faces the contact surface, has a frame shape that covers the outer peripheral edge of the multilayer body.
