The disclosed optical recording/playback device is equipped with: a light source for emitting light for forming a recording mark on an optical tape, or light for reading the state of the recording mark; a tracking mirror for changing the direction of the light emitted by the light source; a collimator for converting the light which was redirected by the tracking mirror into parallel light; an objective lens for concentrating the parallel light from the collimator onto the optical tape; a lens actuator for adjusting the objective lens position in the optical-tape focus direction and the objective lens position in the optical-tape tracking direction; a polarization hologram plate for separating the reflected light irradiated onto the optical tape by the objective lens into a plurality of pencils of light; an optical detector having a plurality of light-receiving elements for receiving the plurality of pencils of light; and a control circuit unit for controlling the lens actuator and the tracking mirror. The tracking mirror is positioned near the light source and is capable of moving in the tracking direction.
