1. A crop harvesting header for the harvesting of crop material, said crop harvesting header comprising:
a. a frame for movement in a travel direction across a crop field, said frame having two reel ends defining the cutting width of the header; b. a transverse conveyor deck extending between the reel ends of the frame, the conveyor deck carrying a conveyor system which will move cut crop material along the conveyor deck to a header discharge; c. a cutter bar along the forward edge of the conveyor deck, which will cut crop material engaged by the header moving under power through the crop; and d. a reel for moving crop material into the cutter bar and onto the conveyor deck, wherein the reel comprises:
i. a reel shaft having a first end and a second end and a reel axis, rotatably mounted to and between the reel ends of the frame;ii. rotational power source connected to the reel shaft to rotate the reel;iii. a plurality of reel bats each of which has a bat member with a bat axis and plurality of crop fingers attached thereon extending generally radially outwardly from the reel shaft, the reel bats being mounted in spaced apart positions around the circumference of the reel shaft;iv. corresponding to each reel bat, a plurality of radial arms extending outward from the reel shaft, each pivotally attached at their distal ends to the reel end of a bat arm also having a bat end, whereby each bat arm can pivot about the reel end defining a pivot axis, in a plane generally perpendicular to the reel axis, wherein all of the radial arms for all of the reel bats are generally the same length and all of the bat arms for all of the reel bats are generally the same length, and wherein:
1. the reel ends of the radial arms define a circular bat path;2. the corresponding reel bat is fixedly attached at the bat end of each bat arm;3. the reel bat once attached can be pivoted about the pivot axis, parallel to the reel axis, in a bat pivot path to move both inside and outside of the radius of the circular bat path; andv. a first cam mounted on the frame perpendicular to the reel axis near the first end of the reel shaft, said first cam being inside of the circular bat path;vi. a first cam follower corresponding to each reel bat, comprising a first link arm and at least one first cam engagement point for engaging the first cam, said link arm being attached to its corresponding reel bat by a crank arm, wherein during rotation of the reel shaft each first cam follower will engage and follow the first cam and the corresponding crank arm can pivot the attached reel bat around its pivot axis;vii. an end pivot stabilizer, comprising:
1. A circular first end shield attached to the frame about the reel shaft near the first end thereof, around the outside of the first cam, a first bat guide path defined by the circular first end shield being generally the same as the circular bat path; and2. an end follower extending out from the first end of each reel bat along the pivot axis of the bat for engaging the circular first end shield;wherein on rotation of the reel shaft, the end follower of each reel bat will be engaged in relation to and follow the circular first end shield while the first cam follower attached to said reel bat is actuated by the first cam to pivot the reel bat in relation to the pivot axis. |
