This invention discloses an organic electroluminescent element (organic EL element) that exhibits improved luminous efficacy, ensures sufficient driving stability, and has a simple structure. Said organic electroluminescent element is provided with organic layers, including a light-emitting layer, between a positive electrode and a negative electrode laminated to a substrate. The organic electroluminescent element contains a carborane compound either in at least one of the organic layers or as a host material in a light-emitting layer that also contains a phosphorescent light-emitting dopant. The carborane compound has a structure in which a nitrogen-containing condensed aromatic ring is bound to a carborane ring. Said nitrogen-containing condensed aromatic ring either is a quinoline ring or has a structure in which one to three of the carbon atoms in a quinoline ring are replaced with nitrogen atoms.
