Disclosed is an electrolyte for an electrochemical device containing a multivalent carboxylic acid compound having an ether group represented by general formula (1) (in general formula (1), G is an (n+1)-valent hydrocarbon group that may contain a substituent group and has a carbon number in the range 2-36; R1-R4 are selected from a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group with a carbon number in the range 1-4, and a hydroxyl group; n is an integer in the range 1-10; and Ra+ is selected from a hydrogen ion, an ammonium ion, and an organic amine ion. The carbon number of the compound represented by general formula (1) is in the range 8-70). An electrolytic capacitor electrolytic solution in which this compound is used is stable, with no precipitation of the electrolytic compound, and shows high withstand voltage.
