PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide transition-metal compounds having the ordered-olivine or the rhombohedral NASICON structure and contains polyanion (PO)as at least one constituent for use as an electrode material for alkali-ion rechargeable batteries.SOLUTION: The present invention provides, e.g., a cathode material for a rechargeable electrochemical cell, the cell also comprising an anode and an electrolyte. The cathode contains a compound having the formula LiMPO, where M is at least one first-row transition-metal cation. The present invention provides a transition-metal compound for use as an electrode material for alkali ion rechargeable batteries.
