The present invention achieves confidential information input and authentication processing, whereby the possibility that confidential information such as passwords will be leaked is reduced. User authentication is performed on the basis of comparison between user input data that is input to an input device and comparison data. The user input data comprises group identification information for groups that have associated thereto each piece of configuration data for user authentication confidential information, said group identification information being selected in accordance with group definition information. The comparison data comprises group identification information for groups having associated thereto each piece of configuration data for registered confidential information, said group identification information being selected in accordance with the group definition information. An authentication device determines whether or not the user is a legitimate user who knows the registered confidential information, in accordance with whether or not the group identification information included in the user input data matches the group identification information included in the comparison data. |
