Provided is a fiber identification method that uses terahertz spectroscopy, which makes operation relatively easy, is objective, and makes it possible to identify fiber without relying on the experience and knowledge of an inspector, and makes it possible to obtain useful information associated with the higher-order structure of the fiber even if the complicated operation of cryogenic grinding is eliminated. Test fiber of an unknown fiber type is used as a test sample in a state in which the fiber has not been subjected to grinding or cryogenic grinding and at least the cross-sectional shape of the fiber is maintained. This test sample is irradiated with electromagnetic waves of a frequency within the range of 0.1 THz to 15 THz, and spectral data is obtained from a transmission spectrum or absorption spectrum in a prescribed frequency band. The obtained spectral data for the test sample is compared with spectral data for a comparison sample comprising a single fiber or composite fiber of a known fiber type, and the fiber type or blending ratio of the test fiber is identified. |
