This invention provides an imaging device and a focusing control method that make it possible to perform focusing control without using phase-detection pixels and without using contrast detection. A digital camera is provided with the following: an imaging element (5) that has an imaging area (50) in which pixels (51) are arrayed two-dimensionally in a row direction (X) and a column direction (Y); an AF processing unit (19) that, with a focusing lens in an arbitrary position, using detection signals obtained from the respective pixels (51) in a first pixel group comprising a plurality of pixels (51) laid out in the row direction (X) and a second pixel group comprising pixels (51) located a fixed distance away from the respective pixels in the first pixel group on one side thereof in a direction that intersects the row direction (X), determines whether or not an in-focus state has been achieved; and a system control unit (11) that moves the focusing lens until the AF processing unit (19) determines that said in-focus state has been achieved. |
