Provided is a method for producing a hydrogenated petroleum resin by reacting dicyclopentadiene with a vinyl aromatic compound, subjecting the product of this reaction to thermal polymerization, and then hydrogenating the thermal polymerization product, the method being characterized by including the following steps (A)-(C): (A) a preliminary reaction step of reacting a vinyl aromatic compound represented by formula (1) (in the formula, R1 is a hydrogen atom, for example) and dicyclopentadiene under conditions whereby selectivity for a phenylnorbornene derivative, which is a product of the reaction and which is represented by formula (2) {in the formula, R1 is the same as mentioned in the formula (1)}, is 90% or higher, thereby obtaining a reaction liquid that contains this phenylnorbornene derivative, (B) a polymerization step of heating the reaction liquid that contains the phenylnorbornene derivative obtained in the preliminary reaction step (A) at a temperature of 240-300ºC, thereby obtaining a polymerization reaction product, and (C) a hydrogenation step of hydrogenating the polymerization reaction product obtained in the polymerization step (B) in the presence of a catalyst, thereby obtaining a hydrogenated petroleum resin. |
