PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deposits of a toner to the surface of a primary transfer body without increasing the size of an apparatus to obtain good images.SOLUTION: There is provided an image forming apparatus 100 that includes: image forming units 1Y, 1C, 1M, and 1K that supply a toner to photoreceptor drums 2Y, 2C, 2M, and 2K having electrostatic latent images formed thereon to form toner images; a primary transfer belt 4 on which the toner images are transferred; and a second transfer roller 7 that presses a recording medium against the primary transfer belt 4 to transfer the toner images to the recording medium; the image forming apparatus 100 further including: a stop mechanism 30 that stops the secondary transfer roller 7; and recording medium counting means 60 for counting the number of the recording media on which the toner images are transferred by the secondary transfer member and outputting a result of the counting. Every time the recording medium counting means 60 counts a predetermined number of recording media, the stop mechanism 30 stops the secondary transfer roller 7, and the image forming apparatus causes the primary transfer belt 4 to travel while the secondary transfer roller 7 is in contact with the primary transfer belt 4 so as to remove deposits stuck on the primary transfer belt 4 with the secondary transfer roller 7.
