This biometric authentication device (1) is provided with a nondirectional-characteristic generation unit (8), a directional-characteristic generation unit (9), a nondirectional-characteristic matching unit (10), a directional-characteristic matching unit (11), and a determination unit (6). The nondirectional-characteristic generation unit (8) extracts, from an image, directional characteristics corresponding to different directions, and from said directional characteristics, the nondirectional-characteristic generation unit (8) generates a nondirectional characteristic. The directional-characteristic generation unit (9) extracts, from the image, directional characteristics corresponding to different directions, and from among said directional characteristics, the directional-characteristic generation unit (9) selects a reference directional characteristic corresponding to a reference direction. The nondirectional-characteristic matching unit (10) obtains a first degree of similarity between the aforementioned nondirectional characteristic and an enrolled nondirectional characteristic stored in a storage unit (7), and the directional-characteristic matching unit (11) obtains a second degree of similarity between the aforementioned reference directional characteristic and an enrolled reference directional characteristic stored in the storage unit (7). The determination unit (6) uses the first and second degrees of similarity, weighting the second degree of similarity less than the first degree of similarity, to determine whether or not a person is a match. |
