This biometric authentication device is provided with a filter (41), an orthogonal filter (42), a nondirectional-feature generation unit (43 through 45), a matching unit, and a determination unit. The filter (41) extracts, from an inputted image, directional characteristics corresponding to different directions. Of the directional characteristics extracted by said filter (41), the orthogonal filter (42) lowers the overall brightness of directional characteristics corresponding to a given direction, raises the overall brightness of directional characteristics corresponding to directions orthogonal to the directional characteristics corresponding to the given direction, and outputs the remaining directional characteristics as is. The nondirectional-feature generation unit (43 through 45) generates a nondirectional characteristic from the directional characteristics outputted by the orthogonal filter (42). The matching unit obtains a degree of similarity between said nondirectional characteristic and an enrolled nondirectional characteristic stored in a storage unit. The determination unit uses said degree of similarity to determine whether or not a person is a match. |
