PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer electrolyte membrane which is superior in methanol permeation suppression characteristics and joining characteristics to an electrode, and suitable for a fuel cell, especially a direct methanol type fuel cell, and also to provide its usage. SOLUTION: A multilayered polymer electrolyte membrane in which two or more layers are laminated is provided, wherein the respective layers are constituted of different polymer electrolytes, and at least one of the polymer electrolyte layers is a sulfonic acid group containing polymer containing a constituting component shown by a chemical formula 1 (X is hydrogen or monovalent cation, Y is sulfonic group or ketone group, and Ar<SP>1</SP>is aromatic compound).
