The method involves operating a memory module (2) according to a last-in/first-out principle. Flat post items are implemented in a flow conveyor in a sorting operation and are stored in the memory module of a segment. The post items are extracted from the module in another operation and stored in another module of another segment. The post items sorted in the modules of the segments are drained according to a draining order. An independent claim is also included for a device for sorting of flat mail items in a route order of a postman for a definable field with a number of maximal addresses.
