PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a signal evaluation device which evaluates the quality of a two-dimensional reproduction signal quantitatively. SOLUTION: The signal evaluation device divides the two-dimensional reproduction signal into bright pixel values corresponding to a recording bit "1" and dark pixel values corresponding to a recording bit "0" by a switch 3. Then, a statistical value computing part 40a computes an averageμ1 and a standard deviationσ1 as statistical values for specifying the frequency distribution of the bright pixel values and computes an averageμ2 and a standard deviationσ2 as statistical values for specifying the frequency distribution of the dark pixel values. Moreover, based on the statistical values, a (μ2-Th)/σ2 arithmetic circuit 9, a (Th-μ1)/σ1 arithmetic circuit 10, aΦ(z) arithmetic circuit 12, aΦ(z) arithmetic circuit 13 and an error rate totaling circuit 14 compute a total error rate.
