PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of brightness unevenness by preventing the flow of an unnecessary sneak current during selection scanning. SOLUTION: Before scanning of a first line in positive and negative fields, all EL elements are charged by as much as a modulation voltage Vm. After the end of the selection scanning, the EL elements connected to the scanning electrodes subjected to the selection scanning are sequentially charged by as much as the modulation voltage Vm. Accordingly, the flow of the unnecessary sneak current to the EL elements of another row when performing the selection scanning of a certain row can be prevented and the occurrence of the brightness unevenness between the respective rows can be averted.
