PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the early deterioration of a fixing roller having a foam rubber surface layer, regarding a fixing device configured to let a recording medium with a toner image go through a gap between the fixing roller and a pressure roller coming in press contact with each other, and to fix the toner image on the recording medium by the action of pressure and heat. SOLUTION: The pressure roller 2 is rotatably supported by a lever 13 that can be oscillated around a support shaft 14, and the lever 13 is oscillated with the rotation of a cam 20, and the contact pressure of the pressure roller 2 against the fixing roller 1 is made variable. During the fixing operation, the contact pressure between the fixing roller 1 and the pressure roller 2 is controlled as a level suitable to the toner image, When the operation of the fixing device is stopped, the contact pressure of the pressure roller 2 against the fixing roller 1 is reduced.
