<p>Fuel injectors with boosted needle control providing controlled and rapid needle closure. Boost and drive pistons (66, 64) are provided for hydraulic actuation to controllably close the needle (38), with the boost piston (66) reaching a mechanical stop before the needle (38) reaches the closed position, with the drive piston (64) alone providing adequate hydraulic force to hold the needle (38) closed. In a preferred embodiment, fuel from the intensifier (20) is coupled to the top of the boost and drive pistons (66, 64) to close the needle (38), and controllably coupled to the bottom of the boost and drive pistons (66, 64) to allow pressure in the needle chamber to open the needle (38). Apparatus for control of fuel pressure to the bottom of the boost and drive pistons (66, 64) is disclosed.</p> |
