PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose ischemic heart disease by using an echocardiogram at rest. SOLUTION: A region of interest is set on a thin layer along the endocardium of the left ventricle wall for the ultrasonic apex long-axis tomogram of a patient taken when the patient is at rest, and the strain rate of the set region of interest is computed. The value of a discriminant function is obtained based on a plurality of values of the strain rate in the intermediate part of the systole of the heart.
