PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic device which is free of deterioration in visibility of a display picture for selecting subtitle sentences when a subtitled film is reproduced on a portable electronic device. SOLUTION: The portable electronic device includes: a storage means for storing a subtitle signal defining a plurality of subtitle sentences and a video signal defining video while making their reproduction timings correspond to each other; a subtitle selecting means for selecting one of the plurality of subtitle sentences defined by the subtitle signal stored in the storage means; a subtitle reproducing means for reproducing the subtitle sentences selected by the subtitle selecting means; and a video reproduction and display means for reproducing and displaying the video signal from reproduction timings corresponding to reproduction timings of the subtitle sentences selected by the subtitle selecting means.
