PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly precisely position columnar spacers for holding a gap between a pair of substrates constant. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel having a first substrate, a second substrate and a liquid crystal interposed between the first and the second substrates. The liquid crystal display panel has a plurality of sub pixels in a display region, the first substrate has a light shielding film formed on the periphery of each sub pixel and in a region except the display region and at least one opening exposing the first substrate is formed in the light shielding film. The columnar spacer is formed in at least the one opening formed in the light shielding film, the columnar spacer is formed so that one end thereof on the first substrate side covers the inner part of at least the one opening and the light shielding film on the periphery of at least the one opening and the second substrate has a metal layer for shielding light in a position where the columnar spacers are disposed.
