Disclosed is a novel, narrowly dispersible, dendrimer-like star polymer having a controlled molecular structure. Also disclosed is a process for producing the star polymer in a simple manner. The star polymer is composed of a core section and an arm section, wherein the arm section has first generation of arms each composed of a polymer chain and second generation of arms each composed of a polymer chain and formed outside of the first generation of arms, the number of the second generation of arms is larger than that of the first generation of arms, each of the first generation of arms is composed of a polymer chain derived from a monomer having a polymerizable double bond, and the ratio of the weight average molecular weight (Mw) to the number average molecular weight (Mn) (Mw/Mn) of the star polymer falls within the range from 1.001 to 2.50. The star polymer can be produced by reacting a compound which has a functional group capable of reacting with an anion and constitutes the core section with a polymer chain which has two or more functional groups and an anionic terminus constituting the arm section.
