<p>Existing methods for detecting Pythium insidiosum in humans who are infected with the pathogen are time consuming and not very reliable. One such method that is time consuming is the staining technique. The staining technique stains for a specific feature of P. insidiosum for identification. However, the production of the specific feature may take several weeks in culture. A method that is fast but not very reliable is the immunodiffusion (ID) test. The ID test detects P. insidiosum by detecting certain antibodies in infected humans, but due to the possibility of cross-reactivity between the antibodies, the ID test becomes less reliable. The present invention is intended to provide a rapid, effective and accurate means for detecting P. insidiosum in humans who are infected by it. An embodiment of the invention discloses a detection method and a detection apparatus therefor with primers specific to P. insidiosum for specific diagnosis of P. insidiosum. The detection method further comprises a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction method, a hybridisation method and an amplification and comparison method.</p> |
